I’ve been recapping the TV show Merlin over at California Literary Review, and one of the things I’m most often brought up against is its portrayal of women.  I’ve been trying to get to grips with the way situations I instinctively read as sexist or troublesome might actually look different to the audience this show seems to be largely aimed at: female (straight) teenagers.  Here are a couple of links to pieces working through this question – one in which it shifts the balance of the plot, “The Once and Future Queen”, and one in which it nuances some very misogynist imagery, “Beauty and the Beast”  I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on the topic.
